HANOI (25 Feb 2012) – Former Vietnam youth team coach Mai Duc Chung has emerged as the front runner to fill the hot seat as the chief coach of the senior team – to fill in the spot left by Falko Goetz.
The Vietnam Football Federation’s (VFF) National Coaches Council will meet early next week to make a final decision on the issue. Duc Chung is currently in Brunei with the Vietnam Under-19 team for the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.
The 61-year-old Duc Chung had previously worked as assistant to several foreign coaches. In 2008, he guided the Under-22 team to win the Merdeka Cup tournament in Malaysia. He was also acting head coach of the U23 team that defeated Lebanon and Oman during the Beijing Olympic qualifiers in 2007.
Duc Chung was appointed head coach of the national women’s team in 2003-05 when they won two gold medals at the 22nd and 23rd SEA Games.
At the same meeting too, the VFF are also expected to announce the name of the new VFF general secretary to replace Dr Tran Quoc Tuan.
