BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (10 August 2009) – Despite having to play without half of their regulars, DPMM FC still managed to score a convincing 2-0 home win over Woodlands Wellington to strengthen their fourth spot in the S-League.
In the match that was played at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, newly signed Croatian midfielder Drazen Govic certainly made a strong impression to his new DPMM employers when he scored his first ever goal with a scorcher from outside the box in the first minute of play. Libero Safari Wahit then slammed home DPMM’s second goal with an easy tap-in in the 53rd minute. Following from DPMM’s humiliating 6-1 defeat to Home United the previous week, the team was playing without regular goalkeeper Wardun Yussof, midfielder Rosmin Hj Md Kamis and Algerian striker Abdel Hamid Berguiga. “We played wonderfully and we could have destroyed Woodlands,” said Vjeran Simunic, the head coach for DPMM. “I promised that Govic would be a success and now look at what happened. I want to thank the fans who came to support the team.” The result pushed DPMM FC to fourth in the S-League with 40 points pushing Home United down to fifth with 37 points. Defending champions SAFFC are still at the top of the table with a comfortable 52 points – 11 points ahead of second-placed Gombak United. On third is Tampines Rovers with the same 41 points as Gombak. CURRENT S-LEAGUE 2009 STANDINGS 1. SAF FC 52pts (+36) 2. Gombak United 41pts (+14) 3. Tampines Rovers 41pts (+13) 4.
