BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (19 Sept 2011) – Brunei’s only professional club DPMM FC stated this week that they have made an official application to re-join Singapore’s S-League for the new season.
DPMM FC had won the Singapore League Cup in 2009 but their foray was cut short the same year when football’s international body FIFA banned them the same year.
The ban has since been lifted earlier this year with Brunei’s Under-19 squad taking part in their first international competition in the AFF U19 Championship 2011 in Myanmar.
But with former coach Vjeran Simunic having already signed a new contract a few days ago, it was revealed that DPMM FC are looking to be competitive in Singapore once again.
“We have already applied, I think it was two days ago,” confirmed Pengiran Waslimin Abdul Momin.
“I’m not sure when we will get a reply. So far I know another club, Sembawang United, have also applied to join (the league). There’s no answer yet, maybe because the league is still ongoing. Maybe they want to know how many teams will be playing 12 or 14.
“They have a lot to think about. I am not sure what the format will be like and whether we will be allowed to play home games.
“I am not sure if we will still join if we can’t play home games but that is what we have proposed.
