SHAH ALAM (August 12, 2007) – Singapore won the double at the sixth Sultan of Selangor’s Cup when their Veteran and Selection teams overcame their Selangor opponents at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.
The Veterans’ team beat their counterparts from across the causeway 1-0 with a solitary goal coming off Abdullah Noor. On the other hand, the Selection side from Singapore turned on the heat to beat Selangor 3-1 in a later match. The first goal came in the 25th minute when Daniel Bennett headed in the cross from Therdsak Chaiman before Selangor replied two minutes after the break through captain Mohd Shukor Adan who delivered an absolute stinger to beat Lionel Lewis for the equaliser. However in the 62nd minute, Mirko Grabovac nodded home Noh Rahman’s cross to restore the lead for Singapore before Farizal Harun completed the victory with a short range effort two minutes to the end. “It was a hard game definitely, especially when the other side scored,” he said head coach V. Sundramoorthy after the match. “The inclusion of Mirko (Grabovac), Farizal (Basri) and the other boys who came in made the difference in the end. It was too bad I could only make six substitutions, otherwise I would have been happy to make ten changes, including myself! “I loved this chance I got to work with some of the S.League’s top players, and the atmosphere was great as well. I won’t retire from this job in the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup; I’m looking forward to coaching a team like this as many times as I can in future.” Selangor Selection coach Dollah Salleh admitted his team found matching the S.League Selection a tough task, but was ultimately satisfied with the evening’s proceedings. “Coming up against such experienced players, I knew from the beginning what kind of things was going to happen,” said Dollah. “But to me, my team performed well and fought hard throughout, and the one thing they could never match was the experience. It was very clear from the score. “Speaking as a player in the Veterans game as well, both Zainal (Abidin Hassan) and I were injured, and that’s why I could not score! In the end, the result is not with us. SELANGOR SELECTION: Megat Amir Faizal, Razlan Joffri (Fahrul Nizwan 59th), Nasrulwan Makmor, Nasriq Baharom, P.
