NAKHON RATCHASIMA (24 Jan 2010) – Denmark made it back to back titles in the King’s Cup when they trounced hosts Thailand 3-0 in the last round-robin match as Poland completed their fixtures to finish second with a 6-1 thrashing of Singapore at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium last night.
The Danes were on target off a Lekic Rajko‘s header in the 18th miute, Johan Absalonsen (36th) and Martin Bern burg (85th) to ensure their perfect record in the competition. “Our players worked very hard in the tournament,” offered Thailand head coach Bryan Robson afterwards. “Poland and Denmark were much stronger than us and we could not do anything.” In the meantime, Poland proved too strong for Singapore as they conceded three penalties for a 6-1 loss which saw them losing all their games in the King’s Cup. Robert Lewandowski‘s double – off a 26th minute penalty and then a second strike in the 37th minute – set the ball rolling before Singapore pulled a goal back off Shi Jiayi in the 39th minute. A second penalty from Maciej Iwanski just before the break allowed Poland to be 3-1 in front. Piotr Brozek (69th minute), Patryk Ma³ecki (80th) and Tomasz Nowak (88th penalty) then scored the other goals for the final scoreline. “We played well in the first 20 minutes, better than we did in the match against Denmark, but then after that we cannot cope anymore,” said Singapore head coach Radojko Avramovic. “The players could not cope with these foreign players in terms of physique and technical abilities. “I’m a bit disappointed with some of the players. With such strong opponents in the tournament, I did not expect much in terms of results, but did expect to see more quality in some of the younger players. “Nevertheless, the King’s Cup is a good tournament for us. It is important that the players learn from playing against big teams like these and use these experiences to raise their game on the international front.” FINAL KING’S CUP STANDINGS (After 3 matches) 1.
