PHNOM PENH (5 June 2012) – May Tola, the spokesman for the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), feels that it is important that his team does well in the qualifying round of the AFC U22 Asian Cup later this month.
Cambodia are in Group F of the qualifiers where they will play all their matches in Vientiane against hosts Laos, Hong Kong, Thailand, China and DPR Korea.
“The U22 Asian Cup is a brand new AFC concept. It is crucial that we perform well in Laos. This age group represents the nucleus for our future competitions like the AFF Suzuki Cup and beyond,” said Tola this week.
And towards making sure that the team get all the exposure they could muster ahead of the qualifying round which will begin on 22 June, the Cambodia U22 side had played several matches against teams in the Metfone Cambodia League.
The team under Prak Somony, managed to beat former champions Naga Corp 3-2 before drawing 1-1 with current league leaders National Police and then holding BoeungKet Rubber Field FC to a 2-2 draw.
The Cambodian youngsters were also in their element as they held Build Bright United to a 1-1 tie. The team is currently in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam for training and friendlies.
