PHNOM PENH (30 June 2014) – Phnom Penh Crown FC inched closer to their first title in three years when they edged mid-table Tri Asia Phnom Penh FC 2-1 at the National Olympic Stadium.
It was Suong Virak who provided the early scare for Phnom Penh when he gave Tri Asia the lead after just 17 minutes. But the ever present Bisan George did not let an opportunity go to waste when he slammed in the 25th minute equalizer.
Eight minutes later, Crown put their noses in front through Odion Obadin which turned out to be the winner when both teams battled through a second half deadlock.
“We stayed on top with another hard-fought win but we struggled a bit on the bumpy pitch. We found ourselves a goal down but managed to get ahead before halftime, which was very good mentally,” said Crown coach Sam Schweingruber after the match.
“An amazing goal by George, a brilliant strike. He could’ve scored with the penalty but I think the keeper got a touch onto the post. But we are very happy how quickly we reacted to that, that’s a sign of mental strength.”
With the full points, Crown maintained their perch at the top of the Metfone Cambodia League with 45 points from 18 matches.
And with just four more games to play for, Boueng Ket Rubber Field who blasted Asia Europe University 4-1 on the weekend, remained on second with 40 points from the same number of games.
Boueng Ket kept up the pace at the top with two goals from Mohammad Tuani (10th and 20th minute) as Khoun Laboravy (25th) and Sok Pheng (41st) added the others.
Chang Hay scored the only goal for Asia Europe in the 67th minute.
In the only other match of the week, Asia Europe University were held to a scoreless draw by relegation-bound Albirex Niigata Phnom Penh FC.
