SINGAPORE (1 April 2025) – Indonesia’s PSM Makassar will host Công An Hà Nội FC from Vietnam while Buriram United FC will entertain fellow Thai League 1 outfit BG Pathum United FC when the first legs of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ semi-finals kick-off on Wednesday.
All four teams will be looking to gain an upper hand over the opening 90 minutes in the battle for a place in May’s inaugural Shopee Cup™ final ahead of the return matches in late April and early May, when the line-up for the title decider will be confirmed.
Công An Hà Nội will go into the knockout rounds with the competition’s only remaining perfect record after Mano Polking’s side won all five of their matches in the opening round to top Group B.
Powered by the creative talents of Vietnam playmaker Nguyen Quang Hai, the 2023 V.League 1 winners notched up victories over Buriram United, Kuala Lumpur City FC of Malaysia, Borneo FC Samarinda of Indonesia, Lion City Sailors FC of Singapore and Kaya FC-Iloilo of the Philippines to finish five points clear at the summit.
The game with PSM Makassar will be Công An Hà Nội’s first since a 1-1 draw with Thép Xanh Nam Định in V.League 1 on 8 March, ensuring Polking’s players are well rested ahead of the encounter at the Gelora B.J. Habibie Stadium in Pare Pare.
PSM Makassar, meanwhile, booked their semi-final berth with a runner-up finish in Group A behind Buriram United, Bernardo Taveres’ side claiming second place ahead of PKR Svay Riang FC from Cambodia.
A 3-0 win over Ðông À Thanh Hôa FC in the final round of group matches in February secured the Liga 1 side’s passage to the last four, with Slovenian striker Nermin Haljeta taking his tally in the competition to four goals with a brace against the Vietnamese side.
Buriram United, meanwhile, will host compatriots BG Pathum United in the first meeting of their semi-final at Buriram City Stadium with the Osmar Loss-coached side attempting to continue a remarkable season of success.
The Thai League 1 champions will feature in the Shopee Cup™ semi-finals having also qualified for the last eight of the AFC Champions League Elite while leading the domestic standings and remaining active in both the Thai League Cup and the Thai FA Cup.
BG Pathum United go into the tie with head coach Anthony Hudson still coming to terms with his new squad having taken over at the club just before their 4-3 win over Terengganu FC of Malaysia in the final round of matches in Group A in February.
That victory ensured The Rabbits advanced to the knockout rounds as group winners having amassed 11 points from their five matches in the opening phase of the competition.
The clash in Buriram will also feature two of the tournament’s leading scorers, with Buriram United’s Lucas Crispim joint top of the chart with five goals alongside Safawi Rasid from Terengganu, who have been eliminated, while BG Pathum United’s Raniel is just one behind.
At stake will be a place in the two-legged final, which is due to be played on a home-and-away basis. The first leg will be played on 14 May 14 with the return to be held one week later.
