SINGAPORE (3 Dec 2017) – The FA of Singapore (FAS) celebrated 125 years of Singapore football at the FAS Nite 2017 held at the Marina Bay Sands recently. Awards were given out to outstanding individuals and clubs from the National Football League (NFL), Women’s Premier and National Leagues and S.League.
Nine individuals also received FAS Awards to recognise their contributions to FAS and Singapore football.
In line with the FAS Council’s vision to build a more inclusive Singapore football fraternity, the annual S.League Awards Night was expanded to recognise all involved in Singapore football. The football fraternity also commemorated FAS’ 125 years at the event, with attendees taking a trip down memory lane from 1950 till today with key figures of each time period.
Attendees of the event included FAS President Mr Lim Kia Tong and members from the FAS Council as well as former Councils, club representatives, sponsors, and representatives from the stakeholders of Singapore football.
Albirex Niigata FC (S) picked up a total of four awards, including the Singapore Pools Fair Play Award. Tsubasa Sano won the RHB Top Scorer of the Year, while Kento Nagasaki was awarded Hyundai Player of the Year Award. The RHB Coach of the Year award went to their Head Coach Kazuaki Yoshinaga, who led the White Swans to defend their quadruple.
The Great Eastern Young Player of the Year Award went to Hazzuwan Halim from Balestier Khalsa FC. His teammate, Huzaifah Aziz’s goal was selected for the Mitre Goal of the Year.
Hazzuwan Halim said: “It was really a good season for us. I’m really surprised (with the win) and it was unexpected. Next year, I hope to be (called up to) the National Team, it is my dream.”
Former National Team captain Samad Allapitchay said: “Tonight was a fitting way to celebrate 125 years of FAS. It was nice to see Prof Ho Peng Kee, John Koh and other familiar faces in the crowd. It was also very good to see long-time friends such as Lydia Lim-Goh being given an award showcasing the appreciation to staff from FAS. Thank you to the FAS and the organising committee for putting together such a wonderful evening.”
NFL Division Two side Gymkhana FC Assistant Club Manager Ramamoorthy s/o Rajagopal said: “We are honoured to be awarded the NFL Division Two champions trophy at this important event. This year saw many positive changes for the NFL and the FAS Nite 2017 was a good way to cap off the Division Two season. We look forward to the challenges that the next season will bring with us playing in Division One.”
