KUANTAN (17 Jan 2014) – An easy placing shot from Malaysia Cup hero Matias Conti early in the second half gave Pahang a 1-0 win over LionsXII and the season opening Charity Shield in the match that was played at the Darulmakmur Stadium tonight.
Conti, who was instrumental in Pahang’s triumph of the Malaysia Cup title last season when they beat Kelantan in the final, found the back of the net in the 57th minute following some confusion in the LionsXII backline.
“We did not play as well as we could,” said Pahang coach Ron Smith. “But then it was the start of the season, so it was kind of expected.
“We are happy with the three points and we hope to pick up from here.”
Added LionsXII coach Fandi Ahmad: “the ground was slippery and that affected the quality of the game. I thought that we played quite well and keeper Izwan (Mahbud) made several good saves.”
