HANOI (17 Feb 2009) – On the day when international striker Le Cong Vinh scored the winner for T&T Hanoi, Dong Thap went to the top of the V-League with a close 1-0 win over defending champions Binh Duong.
Cong Vinh, the hero for Vietnam in their win of the AFF Suzuki Cup last year, nailed the winner five minutes into the second half to beat Da Nang at the Hang Day Stadium. T&T Hanoi started the game strongly with Cong Vinh giving a clear indication of his intention when he hit the Da Nang left post in the fourth minute. Da Nang replied with a flurry of chances through Quoc Anh but all his attempt in a three-minute blitz was denied by keeper Hong Son – voted the most valuable player of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008. But while Cong Vinh muffed a double chance in the closing stages of the first half, he finally made the score sheet when he headed in a Vadiney’s free kick to give T&T the lead and the winner. In the meantime, Dong Thap delivered a surprise when they nailed a 1-0 win over defending champions Binh Duong for their second win from two matches of the new V-League season. On the other hand, Hai Phong staged a revival to beat The Cong 2-1 at the Lach Tray stadium while Song Lam Nghe An were held by Khanh Hoa 0-0.
