MANILA (May 30, 2007) – The San Roque Football Club took both the men and women title in the First Cebu Beach Football Open at the Basdako Beach in Moalboal.
Enroute to their maiden title, the men’s team overcame a side made up of mostly expatriates – Cebu XP – before setting up a grand finale against Queen City. It took a late, late strike from Romeo Bordador to steal the win for San Roque when he blasted in the winner with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock. “It’s an advantage if most of your players learn to play football – barefoot,” said San Roque’s Eleazer Toledo, who also took the Most Valuable Player award of the tournament. Apart from San Roque, Queen City and Cebu XP, there were eight other teams which took part in the men’s division – with one each from Bacolod City and San Carlos City. In the women division in the meantime, San Roque defeated La Salle Bacolod 2-1 in the penalty shootout to emerge as the top team out of five which took part. The score at the end of regulation was 2-2. Beach football, which is now part of FIFA, is a game of five-a-side with just two six-minute halves but like Futsal, the time is stopped each time the ball goes out of play. The tournament in Moalboal was organized by the Don Bosco Football Club and was sanctioned by the Beach Football Association of the Philippines. |
