NAKHON RATCHASIMA (Dec 15, 2007) – Hosts Thailand made a clean sweep of both titles in the football event at this year’s SEA Games when the men’s team beat Myanmar 2-0 in the final at the 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium.
The victory follows the win of the women’s team earlier who beat Vietnam 2-0 in the final a day earlier. Two goals in the first half of the sold out match were enough to give the Thais their ninth straight gold medal at the biennial event. Anon Sangsanoi slammed home in the 15th minute before Teerathep Winothai added the second in the 39th minute for the well-deserved victory. In the fight for bronze, Singapore emerged victorious with a 5-0 whitewash of Vietnam. The game was fairly even in the opening quarter before Sharil Ishak opened account to allow Singapore to take a 2-0 lead off a second goal from Fawaz Nazrul with a minute left to the break. Fawaz then grabbed his first hat-trick in the competition with goals in the 52nd and 56th minute before Agu Casmir completed the rout with the fifth and final goal in the 79th minute. |
