BANGKOK (13 March 2012) – Former champions Chonburi FC took a psychological win for the start of the new Thai Premier League season when they beat all-conquering Buriram United on penalties to lift the Thai King’s Trophy – the first silverware of the year.
The score at the end of the regulatory 90 minutes was 2-2 with Chonburi fighting back from two goals down. In the shootout at the Supachalasai Stadium, Chonburi emerged victorious with a 4-3 score line.
Theeratorn Boonmathan put Buriram ahead in the 31st minutes before Frank Acheampong added the second goal barely a minute later. But Chonburi came back through Adul Lasoh just before the break to put the score at 2-1 at the half.
Ludovick Takam then scored a late equalizer to give Chonburi a 2-2 draw as Chonburi then emerged victorious in the shootout.
The King Trophy is the curtain-raiser to the Thai Premier League which will kick off this weekend.
