BANGKOK (1 Feb 2011) – The Chonburi Sharks picked up their first silverware of the season when they snapped up the King’s Trophy after beating Muang Thong United 2-1 at the Supachalasai Stadium.
The King’s Trophy featured the Thai Premier League Champions (Muang Thong) against the FA Cup winners (Chonburi).
“We know Muang Thong are a good team so we played carefully, using counter-attacks,” said Chonburi coach Jadej Meelarp after the match. “It is a good start to the season for the team.”
Chonburi began the match strongly with talismanic midfielder Therdsak Chaiman coming close with a 17th minute freekick which hit the crossbar.
And while Muang Thong did try to make edgeway through Teerasil Dangda in the closing stages of the first half, the score remained scoreless at the break.
Chonburi then came out firing in the second half before finally breaking through in the 65th minute when Suree Sukha slammed the lead before doubling their lead twenty minutes later when Ekaphan Inthasen then fired in from close range to make it 2-0.
Muang Thong battled hard and earned a consolation goal just before the final whistle through Christian Kouakou.
