YANGON (22 Aug 2015) – With his silky skills and his ability to take on defenders at will, Thailand’s Chanathip Songkrasin has emerged as the best of the best when he scooped up the AFF Player of the Year at the AFF Awards Night here at the Novotel Yangon Max Hotel.
The 5′ 2″ midfielder with club BEC Tero Sasana was instrumental in Thailand’s campaign at the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2014 where his two goals steered Thailand to their fourth ASEAN crown when they beat Malaysia in the final.
“I am of course very happy to win this award,” said Chanathip. “As a player, I am very grateful to be given this honour as it will drive me to be even better next year.”
The night really belong to Thailand when they won nine out of 18 awards that were given out with six players emerging as AFF Best XI in 2014. The six were Kawin Thamsatchanan, Tanaboon Kesarat, Perapat Notechaiya, Sarach Yooyen, Kroekrit Thawikan and Chanathip.
The other five players were Muhammad Shukor Adan and Safiq Rahim from Malaysia, Harris Harun from Singapore and Luong Thanh Pham and also Le Cong Vinh from Vietnam.
Thailand’s head coach Kiatisuk Senamuang also won as the Best Coach for men while Nuengrutai Srathongviang won for women.
They also emerged as the best team for both men and Futsal.
“It has been a great and wonderful year for Thai football but I would like to point out that all of this would not have been possible without the cooperation of everyone involved – inside the team and outside,” added Datuk Worawi Makudi, the president of the FA of Thailand (FAT).
“The players and also officials worked hard towards this success and I hope that we can do even better after this.”
Other than honours for players and officials, there were also recognition given to AFF President, His Royal Highness Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah for ASEAN Goodwill Award for his immense contribution to the federation.
Former AFF general secretary Dato’ Sri Paul Mony Samuel was also given recognition with the AFF Life Service Award.
