YANGON (18 Jan 2012) – Taking full advantage of playing at their own artificial turf, defending Myanmar National League champions Yangon United picked up the opening win of the new 2012 season when they edged Zeyar Shwe Myay FC 1-0.
With the new league sponsored by Myanmar Breweries, there were excitement all around and Yangon United and Zeyar certainly provided a lot of end to end action. But Yangon’s goal with just two minutes left of the first half, killed off whatever Zeyar hope of at least winning a point home.
A free kick from defender Aung Thike, his curling shot totally fooled Zeyar keeper Nyi Nyi Lwin for the only goal of the game.
“I praised him not only for his goal but also his defending as it was so good even Kyaw Ko Ko could not perform as well as he could,” said Eric Williams, the chief coach of Yangon United.
The Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) are working towards introducing a full promotion-relegation system by the end of 2014. At the end of the current season, two teams from the 14-team league will be relegated to the lower second division.
