HANOI (4 March 2009) – Two late goals in the second half did it for The Cong as defending champions Binh Duong stumbled to their first defeat of the V-League season at the Hang Day Stadium.
The score at the end of the well-attended match was 3-1 in favour of the homesters. Both teams started strongly but the early jitters produced no change to the scoreline although The Cong came the closest in the 29th minute only for Binh Duong keeper The Anh to scramble in for the save. Nista then had another shot at goal in the 39th minute but fell a little way off target for both teams to remain on level at the break. But an error just seven minutes into the restart allowed defender Ngoc Duy to be right on target as he drove in a shot for the host to take a 1-0 lead. Binh Duong had a great chance to draw level in the 64th minute with a penalty but The Cong keeper Manh Dung made a spectacular save to deny them. However, Huynh Kesley made up for that miss with the equalizer four minutes later as The Cong then restored their goal advantage with Xuan Thanh making good on a pass from Nista. Striker Endene then wrapped things up for the homesters with the third and final goal in the closing stages of the game. Elsewhere, Hai Phong fell 2-0 to Nam Dinh at the Lach Tray Stadium while Thanh Hoa tied with Song Lam Nghe An 2-2 at the Thanh Hoa Stadium. Two-times champion Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) beat Da Nang 1-0 at Pleiku Stadium as Military Zone 4 beat Dong Thap 1-0 at the Military Zone 4 Stadium, Khanh Hoa edge HCM City 3-1 and T&T Ha Noi drew with Dong Tam Long An 2-2.
