SINGAPORE (2 April 2025) – Buriram United FC will take a two-goal lead into the second leg of their ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ semi-final against Thai rivals BG Pathum United FC while PSM Makassar of Indonesia hold a slim advantage over Công An Hà Nội FC of Vietnam after Wednesday’s keenly contested first leg clashes.
Goals from Supachai Chaided, Pansa Hemviboon and Guilherme Bissoli earned Buriram United a 3-1 victory over BG Pathum United in Buriram City Stadium while Yuran Fernandes’ header secured a 1-0 win for PSM Makassar against Cong An Ha Noi at the Gelora B.J. Habibie Stadium.
The teams will reconvene for the second legs in a few weeks’ time, with PSM Makassar travelling to Vietnam to take on Công An Hà Nội on 30 April while BG Pathum United will host Buriram United in the return fixture of their all-Thailand affair on 7 May.
At stake will be a place in the final of the inaugural Shopee Cup™ as the quest to crown the leading team in Southeast Asian football reaches its climax. The decider will be played over two legs on 14 and 21 May.
Buriram United will go into the return meeting with BG Pathum United confident of progressing after a dominant display, Osmar Loss’s side taking the lead in the 24th minute when the visiting defence could only clear Peter Zulj’s cross as far as Supachai.
The Thailand international took aim from just inside the penalty area and, after his shot took a huge deflection off the outstretched boot of Nika Sandokhadze, the ball looped over Saranon Anuin to put the home side in front.
Sandokhadze almost made amends six minutes later with a header that hit the post but BG Pathum United did eventually level in the ninth minute of the second half, capitalising on a mistake by Buriram United goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom.
Gakuto Notsuda’s corner was swung towards the edge of the six-yard box and, after Chatchai fumbled his attempted catch, Ilhan Fandi headed in from close range.
Buriram United responded almost immediately, however, with Pansa side-footing in a well-struck volley from Zulj’s corner three minutes later to restore his team’s advantage.
And the Thai League 1 champions added to their lead with 16 minutes remaining when Bissoli unleashed an unstoppable strike from 25 yards out, giving Saranon little chance as he bent the ball into the top corner.
PSM Makassar, meanwhile, shaded their meeting with Công An Hà Nội after the visitors squandered the opportunity to take a 15th minute lead.
PSM Makassar captain Fernandes upended his Công An Hà Nội counterpart Nguyen Quang Hai in the penalty area but goalkeeper Reza Arya pushed Alan Grafite’s spot-kick onto his left post to keep the scores level.
There was nothing to separate the teams until the 80th minute when Fernandes was given the time and space in the area to meet Victor Luiz’s corner with a header that the central defender powered beyond Filip Nguyen.
“It’s just the first match, we still have the second match in Vietnam” said Fernandes. “I’m very happy to help the team with the goal and now we focus on the second game. We have to do the same as we did today, try to win.”
