BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (11 Dec 2011) – The Brunei Under-21 squad could not have done any better than to pick up the silver medal at the 4th Borneo Games that was held in Samarinda, Indonesia this week.
After losing 2-1 to hosts East Kalimantan a few days ago, Brunei did what was expected of them to beat South Kalimantan 2-1 in their final round robin tie. But it was not enough as East Kalimantan hammered Sarawak 5-0 in the other tie to win the gold medal.
“This team will compete in the HBT (Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in February) and this is their first outing. It was a good performance, but I was hoping for more,” said Rosanan Samak, the assistant coach of the Brunei U21 team.
“Now we will adjust and improve further for the HBT especially at the defensive end. It is not a problem, but the team required more exposure at the international stage.
“The players are good, but most of them didn’t have international exposure until now. But, the Borneo Games is a good start and a worthy experience for the team.”
Brunei had opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Sarawak. Only four teams took part in the football event at the 4th Borneo Games this year.
