BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (21 October 2017) – Japanese goalkeeping coach Suzuki Daichi believes young goalkeepers in Brunei need more systematic training.
The former goalkeeper coach at J-League 2 side Thespakusatsu Gunma and the Chinese Taipei national women’s team said that though the 20 young goalkeepers who attended today’s National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam’s (NFABD) Open Goalkeeper Training Session at the NFABD Artificial Turf Field were on the right track, they can improve faster if they train better.
“Some of them do not have their positioning and timing right. They can improve better if they have more match-level training sessions,” he said after the session.
“What I mean by “match-level training sessions” is 11 v 11 training sessions, where the goalkeepers play in “match scenarios” with the rest of the team and not just train by themselves,” he added.
Ranging from 10 to 16 years old, seven of the young goalkeepers were from grassroots development team Projek Ikan Pusu (PIP).
Five were from NFABD’s youth development teams, three from Bang Dalam FC, two from Panaga Primary School and the rest were from community teams.
In addition, 13 coaches assisted Daichi with the training.
“On behalf of PIP, I would like to thank NFABD for giving our goalkeepers and coaches this valuable opportunity to learn and benefit from the skills, knowledge and experience of this top-notch Japanese goalkeeping coach,” said PIP head coach Hj Omar Hj Jamil.
“We value this opportunity to update and improve ourselves. Learning is a life-long process and PIP will always take every chance to improve and progress for the good of Brunei football.”
