BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (6 March 2012) – Hosts Brunei made the semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy 2012 when they dispatched Timor Leste 1-0 to join Vietnam in the final four of the championship this year.
Needing to win to ensure their place in the next round Brunei, buoyed by more than 24,000 screaming fans at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium, scored the winner in the 29th minute off Aminuddin Zakwan Tahir.
“We played a good game,” said Kwon Oh Son, the chief coach of Brunei. “Timor Leste were strong. We had five players injured but we were patient.”
In the meantime in a game which has no bearing on the final outcome in the group, Malaysia picked up their first win of the campaign when they beat Cambodia 3-1. Skipper Wan Ahmad Amir Zafran Wan Nadris converted a penalty just two minutes into the tie before Chhun Sothearath replied for the Cambodians five minutes later.
Muhd Ridzuan Abdunloh Pula then restored Malaysia’s lead in the 81st minute as Mohd Yazid Zaini then made the game beyond Cambodia’s reach with the third goal three minutes later.
