Borussia test for Singapore U23

SINGAPORE (8 July 2014) – The Singapore Under-23 team under Aide Iskandar has lined up three friendlies including a match against German giants Borussia Dortmund in their tour of Austria which began yesterday.

The team, which is being prepared for the SEA Games which Singapore will be hosting next year, will play Borussia on 15 July – four days after taking on Czech side FC Pribram. The young Singapore squad has a third match to play on 20 July against a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent.

“Playing against top teams like Borussia Dortmund will help our players understand where we are at this early stage of their development,” said Aide.

“Hopefully, they will be inspired to improve themselves after this trip. I know my boys will be up for it and this will be a golden opportunity for them to show what they can do. I’m looking forward to it.”

Among the notable inclusions in the U23 squad are Irfan and Ikhsan Fandi, who are the sons of LionsXII coach Fandi Ahmad.

“They were both given good reviews by their coaches. This trip will give me an opportunity to look at their talents at international stage,” added Aide.

“We will still continue to scout for outstanding young talents in Singapore or overseas before finalizing the final squad for SEA Games 2015.”

The Singapore U23 team will be in Salzburg, Austria on 7-23 July.
