KUCHING (August 9, 2007) – Bayern Munich could only score a 2-1 win over Malaysia for a winning start to their campaign in Group D in the Champions Youth Cup (CYC) which got underway at the Sarawak Stadium last night.
The German giants scored a goal in each half to edge the hosts despite having the lion’s share of the possession throughout the 70-minute encounter. Bayern wasted nearly half a dozen other chances but coach Kurt Niedermayer was still pleased with the winning start. “I am happy with my team’s performance. I am also happy with the 2-1 win. It could have been a bigger win for us if only we had converted all the chances that we created,” Niedermayer told a post match press conference. “The pitch was bumpy but we are not complaining. We are a youth team and have played on similar fields back home in Germany. So I am not complaining about the bare patches that were seen at the stadium.” Bayern had to wait till the last minute of injury time to break the deadlock against the homesters who played well to contain their skilful opponents. The goal came when Thomas Muller used his speed to full use and broke through on the right. He sent a beautiful cross into the Malaysian penalty box where the unmarked Gianluca was left with an easy task for a first timer past goalkeeper Khairul Fahmie Che Mat. It was a goal that Bayern needed after the tale of missed chances in the entire first half while for Malaysia, it was heartbreak. But the Malaysian juniors were back after the break with another fighting display and drew level in the 55th minute when Bayern captain Bjorn Kopplin could only turn the ball past his goalkeeper Ferdinand Oswald when he was challenged by Malaysia’s Mohd Nazrin Nawi. However, Bayern deservedly got the winner deep in injury time which came via a free kick from Diego Contento who floated the ball to the far post for Viktor Bopp who chested it down before hitting the back of the net. In another Group D match, PSV Eindhoven pulled off a 1-0 win over English club Chelsea. The winning goal came in the 47th minute when Nigel Hasselbaink scored with a first timer after when he was in the right position to hit home a cross from the right by Stijn Wuyten. “Two days ago the pitch was horrible but today we can play on it and the important thing is that there were no injuries (for the next match),” added PSV head coach Roland Vroomans. “The few substitutions allowed us to grab the lead in the second half which turned out to be the winner.” AT THE DARULAMAN STADIUM in Alor Star for Group A matches on the other hand saw Flamengo being held to a 1-1 draw by AC Milan while Ajax Amsterdam were held scoreless by Arsenal.
