KUALA LUMPUR (1 Sept 2018) – Two quick strikes from Henrique Martins in the first half steered Timor Leste to a 3-1 win over Brunei in the AFF Suzuki Cup first leg qualifying round match at the KLFA Stadium here tonight.
This provides Timor with a fairly comfortable lead heading into the second leg in Brunei next week.
“The win was good but whether it will be enough remains to be seen,” said Timor Leste head coach Norio Tsukitate.
“We need to change certain aspects of our game. We need more concentration and a little more experience.”
Henrique, quick on his feet and regularly troubling the defence, scored in the 28th and 32th minutes.
Brunei picked up their game after the break and began launching forward.
After a few decent attacks, substitute Muhammad Azwan saw his chance and scored. Mohammad Shah headed down a cross into the path of Azwan.
In added time, Rufino Walter Gama sped down the right, slipped past the defence and set up an unmarked Silveiro Garcia who easily tapped in their third goal.
“We made some mistakes in the first half. But at least we managed to score a goal in the second half which was important for the away rule,” said Brunei DS head coach Kwon Oh Son.
