KUALA LUMPUR (1 Dec 2012) – Two years ago, Malaysia took the difficult route to the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals. Playing in Jakarta then, Malaysia had to defeat Laos and hope for Indonesia to dump Thailand in the last group matches. We know how things turned out then.
Two years on, Malaysia are second from the bottom in Group B and once again facing a difficult path to the semifinals. Later tonight, Malaysia must defeat Indonesia to avoid a premature exit from the competition they were crowned champions in 2010.
“We have no choice but to win. I am confident of my players … we will make it,” said coach K. Rajagobal.
“The players know what they need to do. They know the importance of the match against Indonesia. We have to play with aggression and focus on winning.”
And to beat Indonesia, Malaysia may have to make some changes. “Yes they may be some changes in the lineup, but even if there are it will be minimal.”
On the crock list at the moment are Khyril Muhymeen and S. Kunalan. Khyril sustained his injury during the match against Laos while Kunalan was ruled out during the evening training session yesterday.
“Khyril has a groin injury and that can be serious. I will observe him and speak to the team doctor,” Raja said. He confirmed that Kunalan’s injury and said that he would consider his options against Indonesia.
On Indonesia, Raja warned that the team’s confidence is at a high after defeating Singapore.
“Sure, their confidence level is high and we will have to be prepared for them.”
He said their key players like Elie Aiboy, Andik Vermansyah and Fachruddin were dangerous. “We must also guard against counter-attacks.”
Indonesian coach Nil Mazhar is hopeful the team will be motivated again as they were against Singapore.
“We are not thinking of a draw but how to be the best team tonight. We must have strong fighting spirit and be prepared to fight to the end.”
