PHNOM PENH (17 Oct 2016) – HOSTS Cambodia and Brunei had a convincing start in the AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifiers when they both won their opening matches. But their success could very quickly turn to despair when they face each other here tomorrow in the battle between the top two teams in the standings.
A loss for either side tomorrow would put a severe dent in their dreams of claiming the sole precious berth to the Finals next month. In fact, a defeat could effectively end their hopes altogether which is why both sides are expected to go flat out to ensure success. A victory will give the winner six points and place them within an arm’s length of advancing.
For the record, the winning team in the qualifiers will be placed in Group B along with hosts Myanmar, Malaysia and Vietnam. Group A, meanwhile, comprises hosts the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.
In tomorrow’s penultimate match day, Cambodia will have the edge thanks to the massive home ground advantage. Tickets to tomorrow’smatch are a prized commodity with over 50,000 fans expected to pack the National Olympic Stadium here.
Brunei coach Mike Wong, was candid and said that Cambodia are the strongest side here. He also vividly remembers his team’s defeat to Cambodia at the same venue here last year. “They are the strongest, and we have to keep it very tight. Last year, we lost to them by a big scoreline.
He added: “They have improved a lot in the last two or three years. We may not have improved as much but we’re getting there.”
Brunei’s stunning performance against Timor Leste two days ago has sparked hopes of a surprise result tomorrow. Led by Leicester-based Faiq Bolkiah, the Brunei team came from behind to edge a skilful Timor Leste side 2-1. The odds may not favour Brunei, who have two players on the crocked list, but an upset cannot be discounted.
For now Mike and the team are relishing their opening win. “If you had asked me before the (first) game if we had three points, I really wouldn’t be able to tell you. But we knew we would be competitive throughout the three games.”
