HO CHI MINH CITY (6 May 2015) – It will be an anxious 90 minute wait for Myanmar to see if they have qualified for this year’s semi-finals of the AFF Women’s Championship even though they have picked up their second win in Group B following their 4-0 beating of Malaysia in their final group match this afternoon.
With the Philippines taking on hosts Vietnam in the second match of the day, anything they say in football can happen and should the Philippines beat Vietnam – by at least seven goals – then they will finish the group ahead of the girls from Myanmar.
And this afternoon with so much at stake, Myanmar were all action on the field as they attacked the Malaysian fort from all angles. But the Malaysians were more determined as they had done in their previous loss against Vietnam.
They regrouped well to deny Myanmar for long periods and as their frustration grew, it gave confidence to the Malaysians to go forward. But with the lack of pace upfront, it was always going to be a struggle for them to get their first goal of the competition.
The introduction of the wily Than Than Htwe in the 35th minute injected life into the Myanmar game and with just two minutes remaining of the first half, they duly went forward when Win Theingi Tun turned the Malaysian defence to shoot past keeper Asma Junaidi.
And just a minute after the breather, Asma’s goal was breached again when Win Theingi slammed home from close range.
But Asma did not lose focus and despite receiving treatment several times to her injured knee, she still continued to play a pivotal role in denying Myanmar before she caved in the 69th and 75th minute off strikes from striker Yee Yee Oo.
RESULT – 6 May 2015
