YANGON (12 Sept 2011) – Vietnam put up a commanding display to beat Indonesia 6-1 to take control of Group B of the AFF Under-19 Championship as hosts Myanmar as expected whitewashed Brunei 6-0.
The Vietnamese, who had held hosts Myanmar to a 1-1 draw in their first game and then slammed Brunei 7-0 in their second match, scored three goals in each half to pick up the full points over Indonesia.
“The score line is good but we are looking at the three points,” said Truong Hai Tung, the team manager of Vietnam after the match at the Aung San Stadium.
Indonesia certainly did not do themselves any favour when just five minutes into the game, they allowed Vietnam to score two goals.
The first was a header from Nguyen Thank Hien, who made good on a cross from Ho Sy Sam while the second was from Nguyen Xuan Nam, who unleashed a swerving shot from outside the box to beat Indonesian custodian Adel Satria Nanda.
But while the Indonesians did manage to give themselves a lifeline when they pulled a goal back off Zoel Fhadli in the 13th minute, they just could not sustained the pressure as Vietnam restored their two-goal advantage with their third goal in the first half from captain Que Ngoc Hai.
Two minutes into the second half, and the Indonesians fell further behind with Sy Sam slamming in from the far post.
This prompted the Indonesian camp to change their keeper for substitute Supianto but Vietnam still managed to add to the score line with Sy Sam nailing a personal double with the second goal on 57 minute.
Just two minutes later, striker Phan Dhin Thang completed the win for Vietnam with the sixth goal of the game.
“We made far too many mistakes and letting in the two goals early in the game affected our concentration,” said Zulkilfi Alfat, the chief coach of Indonesia.
In the match at the Youth Training Centre, hosts Myanmar overwhelmed Brunei 6-0 to move into the third spot in the group.
A brace each from Yan Naing Htwe (9th and 35th minute) and Thiha Zaw (83rd and 87th minute) put Myanmar well on the way with the other goals being scored by Soe Paing Thway (41st) and Ye Ko Ko (90th).
