BANGKOK (18 August 2014) – Vietnam gave high-riding Singapore some tough lessons in football when they whitewashed the latter 10-0 on the second match day of the AFF Under-19 Women’s Championship this afternoon at the Rajamangala Stadium.
The Singapore girls, who had shot to the top of the standings after beating Timor Leste by four goals at the end of the first day of the championship, just could not muster the same kind of confidence when they found themselves downed by eight goals at the end of the first half alone.
“We are always happy when we win of course,” said Vietnam coach Nguyen Duy Hung. “But it was the first match, so we had to be careful as there are so many days yet.
“We rested a few players which mean that we should be more prepared for the next game.”
Having had the day off on the first matchday, the Vietnam girls were all business from the very first whistle blown by Malaysia’s Rita Ghani. And just five minutes in, Vietnam grabbed their first goal of the game when Nguyen Thi Minh Anh fired in a freekick to beat Singapore keeper Nur Syafiqah Peer Mohamad.
Two minutes later, Le Hoai Luong nailed the second goal for Vietnam from inside the box as she went on to score five more goals in the 13th, 19th, 24th, 35th and 37th minute before the end of the first half.
The other goal for Vietnam just before the half, was scored by Nguyen Kim Anh in the 28th minute.
“I took full responsibility for this result. I had to make changes to the team which played in the first game (against Timor Leste), as these girls are very inexperienced and they are not used to playing matches every other day,” said Hyrizan Jufri, the coach of Singapore.
“We have to think over a period of games as our team is very young. But I thought that we defended well in the second half.”
Several changes into the second half, saw Vietnam scoring twice more through Bui Thi Trang in the 57th minute and then Le Thi Thuy Trang seven minutes to the end.
