SURABAYA (12 Sept 2013) – Thailand blasted eight goals past Brunei tonight to sensationally score their first win in the AFF Under-19 Championship here at the Gelora Delta Sidoarjo. The 8-0 win made up for Thailand’s opening loss to Vietnam and set them back on track to battle for a place in the semifinals.
In another match played at the same time at the Petrokimia Gresik, Indonesia maintained their top spot on the standings when they labored to a 2-1 win over Myanmar.
Thailand, who opened up a four-goal lead in the first half, knocked in a somewhat lucky first goal seconds into the game. Supravee Miprathang raced in and blasted his shot which bounced off a defender and sail into goal. Ratchanon Phunklai , Chenrop Samphodi and Kullachat Jeentanorm added three more before the break.
Kullachat claimed his hattrick in the second half when he hammered in two quick goals in the 47th and 54th minutes. Atthawit Sukchuai and Kandanai Thawornsak completed the rout in the 77th and 88th minutes.
For Brunei, they had the worst possible start to the game when their first choice keeper Abdul Hafiz Abd Rahim sustained an injury during the pre-match warm-up session. Md Burhanuddin Edy Esmady stepped up to take his position between the posts knowing that the team was counting on him and also the fact that they had no other reserve.
With the win today, Thailand have moved up two rungs into third spot behind leaders Indonesia and Vietnam who have six points each. Thailand have remaining matches against Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar to try and work their way through to the last four.
After the first goal from Supravee, Ratchanon soon added his name to the scoresheet in the 12th minute after heading home a precise cross from Kullachat. In the last 10 minutes, Chenrop forced his way through to the goal while Kullachat converted a penalty after teammate Kandanai Thawornsak was brought down in the box by Muhammad Faiq.
Earlier on the half hour mark, Brunei had a bit of a scare when reserve keeper Md Burhanuddin was involved in a full blown clash with Piyapong Homkhajon. To Brunei’s relief, the keeper was alright but Piyapong was booked for his reckless tackle.
