VIENTIANE (16 July 2011) – Myanmar won Group B of the AFF Under-16 Youth Championship when they played a patient game to beat Vietnam 3-1 in the final group tie that was played this afternoon here at the National Stadium.
With the three points, Myanmar emerged as group winners ahead of Singapore, who beat Cambodia 4-0 in the other final group tie to finish the preliminary group stage as runners-up.
“Everything went according to plan. The players stuck to the tactical discipline and that is the result that we got today,” said Marko Koscina, the chief coach of Myanmar.
“I know people do not believe in this team but I know what they are capable of and making the semi-finals is proof of this team’s ability.”
Following from their comprehensive beating of the Philippines in their previous match, Vietnam pulled no punches just as soon as Thai referee Mongkolchai Pechsri blew for the start of the game.
They were looking for holes in the Myanmar defence with Do Duy Manh and Nguyen Quang Hai making foraging runs to no avail.
But in their haste to look for the early goal, a quick counter-attack saw Myanmar grabbing the lead in the 11th minute through Wai Hin Tun after team-mate Hlaing Bo Bo had drawn Vietnam keeper Duong Quang Tuan out.
Four minutes later, Myanmar made it 2-0 when Aung Thu fooled the entire Vietnam defence with a chip that beat Quang Tuan for the second time in the afternoon.
In the 16th minute, Vietnam got a chance to pull a goal back but the free kick from Y Thuyn Mlo went wide off the upright.
But after some quick passes together, Vietnam finally got the goal they were looking for when off a free kick from Dang Van Hung, the waiting Trieu Viet Hung headed the ball in.
The score at the half was 2-1 to the advantage of Myanmar at the half.
Vietnam pushed harder into the second half and just like it was in the first half, it was Myanmar who went in front again in the 65th minute when Aung Myat Soe made good off a cross from Thant Zin Win.
In the 80th minute, Viet Hung broke through for Vietnam but his shot went straight to Myanmar keeper Zin Myo, increasing the pressure on the team to overcome the deficit.
And in their frustration in the closing stages of the game, Vietnam’s Nguyen Duy Dien was red carded for pulling back on Khant Ko Ko Soe for what would have been a goal scoring opportunity.
