NAYPYITAW (26 Aug 2013) – Myanmar picked up their first albeit late win in Group A of the AFF AYA Bank Under-16 Championship when they beat hapless Brunei 5-0 here at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium.
With Australia already through to the next round and Vietnam likely to follow suit, the win by the hosts has at least alleviated some of the pain of losing their first two matches and expected exit from the group stage.
And this evening, Myanmar pulled out all the stops in search of the early goal and while the 19 goals piled by Australia on Brunei is just way out of reach, still there was no fault in Myanmar from trying their hardest.
Eight minutes in and Myanmar put their noses in front when captain Ye Yint Aung rifled in from some 20metres to beat Brunei custodian Abdul Mutalip Awang Mohamad.
Ten minutes later and it was two-goal up for Myanmar when Ye Yint Ko slammed in the corner from Hein Phyo Win. The home team went into the dressing comfortable on a 4-0 advantage off Min Thu in the 35th minute and then an own goal from Brunei defender Mohd Azri Aspar just before the breather.
Brunei put up a much better effort into defending in the second half as they denied Myanmar a hatful of chances. The hosts tried as hard as they could but the Brunei defence held up until the 86th minute when a slip up allowed Phyo Win to score from inside the box.
