HANOI (6 August 2014) – With a spanking new stadium in the 55,000 capacity Sports Hub to boost, Singapore will be hoping to bring back the Kallang Roar when they open their title defence at home in the AFF Suzuki Cup later this year.
Following the official draw of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2014, the four-time champions have been placed in Group B of the meet against three-time winners Thailand, 2010 champions Malaysia and also the winning team from the qualifying round in Laos.
No doubt, the air of excitement will build up over the next several months where in Singapore; it will begin with a big match against Italian champions Juventus next week.
“Everyone in Singapore is looking forward to the AFF Suzuki Cup and we are now another step closer to the tournament following the official draw,” said Zainudin Nordin, the president of the FA of Singapore (FAS).
“It has been important for us to place great emphasis on producing and developing young players in the past few years, and we are beginning to see the fruits of our labours.
It is good to see many National Football Academy graduates in the National Team now; in fact, we even have players who have played in the Lion City Cup in past years who will represent the country in the AFF Suzuki Cup now.
“All of our players are keen to give of their best in the competition on home ground, and we hope our fans will pack the terraces to cheer us on and give us the extra boost.”
In Group A are hosts Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and the runners-up team from the qualifiers.
