BANGKOK (11 July 2012) – The AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 draw was held today and what an exciting event it turned out to be. The much-anticipated draw, which is being closely followed by millions of fans in the region, concluded with defending champions Malaysia drawn in Group B with arch rivals Indonesia, Singapore and the runners-up from the qualifying competition.
Thailand will host Group A and will have to battle the likes of Vietnam and the Philippines for the semi-final slots. The winner of the qualifying competition, which will be held in Yangon from Oct 5-13, will complete the group.
“It’s going to be an exciting and electrifying competition. Our matches will attract the fans. However, my immediate priority as the host is to win the group and qualify for the semifinals. But let there be no doubt that our mindset is to be champions … that’s where we want to be,” said Malaysian coach Datuk K. Rajagobal.
“I’m excited with the challenge. Both Indonesia and Singapore are tough. The qualifier will also be a tough team.”
Thai coach Winfried Schaefer said it was an interesting draw. “I’m looking forward to this tournament. From what I’ve seen of Vietnam and the Philippines, they are all strong. This event is important to the people of Thailand. We are aiming for the final.”
