BANGKOK (9 Dec 2014) – The odds are clearly stacked against a Filipino victory tomorrow. But with any football match, the odds sometimes get thrown out the door. While the advantage rests with the Thais for tomorrow’s second leg AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal match in front of a sell-out crowd, there is a possibility the Philippines could pull off an upset, thanks to the away goal rule.
With the game starting on level terms after 0-0 draw in the first leg in Manila, the Philippines will double their advantage if they score a goal. To put it plainly, if the Philippines take a 1-0 lead, Thailand will need to score two goals to win the match. Even if Thailand equalizes at 1-1, it will not be enough as Philippines one away goal is equivalent to two goals.
“I’m happy to be in Thailand. The first leg 0-0 score was perfect and we are starting here as the underdogs. And with 50,000 plus fans in the stadium, it’s going to be very difficult for us,” said Philippines coach Thomas Dooley today. “We know it can be difficult for them as well. If we score, it could be tough on them.”
The Philippines also have an added reason for going all out tomorrow to deliver a famous victory for the country. “It is a difficult time for the team to leave home. We want to send the message home that we will give everything we have to try and make them proud of us. We really hope all will be fine,” said Dooley of typhoon Ruby which has devastated some parts of the country and led to some loss of life.
Filipino player, Jerry Ruben Lucena said that the team was eager to play the game. “As footballers, we all look forward to playing big games in front of so many fans. Our thoughts are with our fans back home and we hope to we can give them something.”
