PHNOM PENH (11 July 2016) – Host Cambodia and Timor Leste stamped their authority in Group B of the AFF Smart Under-16 Championship as they look to provide a challenge to defending champions Thailand.
With the Thais having the day off today, Cambodia lambasted Laos 3-1 while Timor Leste blanked Brunei 3-0.
Timor, playing in the opening game of Group B at the National Olympic Stadium, were clearly the better side as they dominated proceedings to press Brunei into their own half.
Following a relentless assault on the Brunei back four, Juvencio Ximenes rightly picked out the space for the lead in the 26th minute before Expedito Da Conceicao then doubled the advantage two minutes before the end of the first half.
Just five minutes into the restart, Osorio Gusmao then put the game beyond Brunei’s reach with the third goal of the game to put Timor comfortable ahead.
And while Timor did take their foot off the pedal for the remainder of the tie, Brunei just lacked ideas on how to exploit for a comeback.
In the meantime, hosts Cambodia gave the screaming 5,000 fans something to cheer in their opening game in the group with a commanding display over Laos.
Sieng Chanthea grabbed a brace off goals in the 42nd and 71st minute as Sin Kakada added one in between in the 45th minute for the full points.
“I’m sorry that I could not score more goals to make the fans happier,” said Nilanh after the game. “There were a lot of chances for sure but the rain made the ground a little slippery.
“I will do better the next time.”
Laos pulled a goal back off Bounphachan Bounkong nine minutes to the end for the final score.
