NAYPYITAW (13 July 2016) – Defending champions, Thai Son Nam District 8 FC of Vietnam secured their place in the women’s final of the AFF Futsal Club Championship despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Bangkok FC at the Futsal Indoor Stadium here today.
Thai Son Nam, winners of the inaugural tournament last year, have won two group stage matches and after today’s result hvae seven points, enough to assure their place in the final on Saturday. They top the group with Khon Kaen second with six points.
The top two teams at the end of the group stage qualify for the final while the third and fourth placed teams in the standings will slug it out in the third-fourth placing playoff.
It was a thriller of a game today as Bangkok FC staged a late charge to pull off a draw against the favourites. The Vietnam club took the lead after only two minutes through Nguyen Thi Thanh. But their hopes of reeling in more goals did not quite work out as Bangkok FC fought back. They landed two penalties in the dying minutes but Sawitree Mamyalee and Treeratchada Boonpload both failed to score.
The pace picked up in the second half with play quickly switching from end to end. Both had their chances but wiht less than a minute to go, it looked like Thai Son Nam would clinch it. In their deperation to stop the Bangkok FC strikers, Thai Son Nam gave away a penalty which Sawitree did not miss this time.
But the drama was not yer ove. With one second to go, Bangkok FC earned another penalty, this time though, Thai Son Nam keeper, Truong Kim Ngan kept her cool and confidently cleared the shot.
In the first match of the day, Khon kaen FC from Thailand improved their chances of qualifying for the final of the women’s category of the AFF Futsal Club Championship after brushing aside local team, Women’s FC 3-1 at the Futsal Indoor Stadium here today.
Khon Kaen shot to a 3-0 lead in the first half with goals from Siranya Srimanee (10th, 16th) and Darika Peanpailun (7th). The Thai team continued to pressure their opponents after the break as they hunted down more goals. But WFC keeper Zin Min Tun was at her best and blocked all attempts that came her way.
WFC worked hard to get the goals but only managed to break through 50 seconds from the end through Yu Yu Soe.
Thai Son Nam faces Khon Kaen tomorrow in a clash of the top two teams while Jaya Kencana Angels and Bangkok FC will contest the other match. Jaya still has a chance of making the final if they win by a decent margin and Khon Kaen loses.
