BANGKOK (21 Oct 2013) – The effort was brave and the fight was a little brazen at times but in the end, Brunei just had to contend with a 8-1 loss to Thailand this evening at the Bangkok Thonburi Stadium.
“We tried very hard to deny Thailand and I thought that we defended well at times,” said Brunei team manager Mohd Yunos Mohd Yusof. “But Thailand just had the quality to find their way through no matter what.”
Powered by ASEAN Futsal Player of the Year in 2013, Suphawut Thuenklang was pulling all the actions as Konghla Lakka scored the opener as early as the first minute.
But Brunei were unfazed as just several seconds later, Muhammad Naqib Timbang replied with the equalizer to send shockwaves through the several thousand fans who had turned up to watch the Thais in action.
With Brunei then tightening up their defence, it took Jetsada Chudech in the seventh minute before he was able to give Thailand the lead once more before further goals from Suphawut (10th minute) and Kritsada Wongkaeo (10th) made it 4-1 moments later.
Just before the break, two quick goals from Nawin Rattanawongswa (18th) and Patchaya Srimanta (18th) made sure that Thailand are 6-1 in the lead at the break.
Into the second half, Thailand created a handful of chances but was only able to add to their tally off Kritsada (30th) and Jirawat Sorwichian (32nd).
“Obviously we need to improve on this,” said Victor Hermans, the Thai coach. “Creating chances are not good enough if we can’t put them away. We need to be more sharp.”
In the second match of Group A, Vietnam faced little resistance as they coast to an easy 10-1 beating of the Philippines for their second win in the group.
A brace each from Nguyen Bao Quan (4th and 9th minute), Tran Van Vu (12th and 33rd), Luu Quynh Toan (16th and 34th) and Hoang Tuan Vu (14th and 37th) put Vietnam well on the way.
The remaining goals were scored by Tran Hoang Vinh (6th minute) and Pham Thanh Tuan (16th).
The only blot in Vietnam’s comprehensive victory was the badly sprained shoulder suffered by Vu Xuan Du following a clash against Philippines keeper Romeo Francis Paranpan.
Xuan Du was immediately sent to the hospital for further assessment.
