BANGKOK (23 Oct 2013) – As Australia romped to a 7-3 win over Indonesia to win Group B, Myanmar kept their hopes of a place in next year’s AFC Miracle of Life Futsal Championship alive when they thrashed Timor Leste 10-0 to finish third in the group.
Needing to win so as to avoid expected Group A winners Thailand in the cross-over semi-finals, the Australians could not have asked for a better start then when Tobias Seeto gave them the lead early in the very first minute of play.
But the makeshift Indonesian side, who were without a handful of their regulars, did not lose hope when just a minute later, Andri Kustiawan slammed home the equalizer.
However, a lapse in concentration would cost Indonesia dear when Australia’s Jarrod Basger (3rd minute) and also Gregory Giovenali (4th) extended their lead before Andri again pull a goal back in the seventh minute for the score to stand at 3-2.
A minute before the break, Daniel Fogarty restored Australia’s two-goal lead as Gregory then nailed his second of the afternoon in the 23rd minute for them to be comfortable at 5-2 in front.
A red card on Indonesian keeper Asep Irwan a minute later for blocking the ball outside the D gave Australia further impetus as they then went on to score through Basger (36th and 39th minute).
And while Andri completed his hat-trick not too long afterwards, a second yellow card offence saw Andri being ejected from the game by Vietnam referee Hung Cuong Le.
CRASH … the Australian bench topples over
In the meantime, Myanmar kept their hopes of a place in the AFC Futsal Championship alive when they beat Timor Leste 10-0 with a brace each from Kyaw Soe Moe (6th and 16th minute), Naing Ye Kyaw (9th and 32nd) and Htew Win Lin (12th and 24th), Pyae Pyo Maung 2 (10th and 11th).
The remainder of the goals came from Pyae Pyo Maung (5th minute) and Aung Aung (26th).
With the win, Myanmar finished third in Group B where now they will have to wait for the result between Malaysia and the Philippines to see if they have made the cut for the AFC meet in 2014.
The best third-placed team in either group will make the cut after the confirmation from Thailand (AFC runners-up in 2012), Vietnam (2014 hosts), Australia and Indonesia (semi-finalists).
