KUALA LUMPUR (15 August 2012) – With the target of making the final of both the men’s and women’s Futsal events at the SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013 already in place, the first real test for newly-appointed Malaysian Futsal coach Marcelo Serpa Coelho will be the AFF Futsal Championship in 2013.
Serpa was recently signed by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) to look into their Futsal development programmes after several years of being in the back waters.
“I think that six months or so (until the next AFF Futsal Championship in 2013) is a good enough time to prepare a team,” said Serpa (pix).
“I have had a look at both the men’s and the women’s team and I think that they will need some work. There are some good players but they need to improve on their tactical play.
“They are always falling into the trap of not doing the right thing at the right time. It may sound simple but the game of Futsal is so high intensity, so we need to make sure that the players understand this concept.”
Other than a strong league, Serpa also said that the team will need to arrange for more local and international matches. He said that apart from the giving the teams a more competitive atmosphere, it will also allow them the opportunity the chance to promote Futsal.
“One good competitive match against a strong side will allow a team to learn more than two months of training,” he added.
“I believe that we can be competitive against Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. And I hope that by the time of the next AFF Futsal, we have built a competitive enough team from Malaysia.”
