BANGKOK (20 April 2012) – It was a cracking opener from tournament favourites Thailand when they swept past Brunei 22-0 in a Group B match of the AFF Futsal Championship at the Bangkok Thonburi Stadium today.
Led by playmaker Suphawut Thuean, who was a standout with his superior skills and amazing control, Thailand completely outplayed their opponents to collect full points but more importantly, they also sent out the message that they were the ones to beat here.
Thailand’s classy display would surely have sent shivers down the spines of their other opponents who watched them in action today. This was the biggest win of the tournament so far following Indonesia’s 16-1 win over Timor Leste yesterday evening.
In the second Group B tie here later in the evening, Timor got over their heavy loss the previous day to score a hard-fought 4-3 win over Laos tonight.
Soon after a simple but colourful official opening ceremony today, Thailand, playing their first match of the tournament, exploded on court and scored within 20 seconds of the kick-off. As it turned out, the opening goal scorer Suphawut was the star of the team. He doubled the score within two minutes and added two more in the first half. By the break, Thailand were 9-0 up.
Suphawut was simply unstoppable and continued to harass the Brunei defence throughout. He eventually scored five goals today but he also played a crucial role in the team’s rout today by setting up his teammates.
Thailand’s other goals were netted by Kritsada Wongkaeo (five goals), Jirawat Sornwichia (three), Aref Ahamah (three), Jetsada Chudech (two) and numbers Nattawut Madlaya, Thanakorn Penpa and Apiwat Chaemcha one goal each.
In his haste to clear the ball, Brunei defender Ulfi Aminuddin blasted into his own net. Brunei had a chance to break the duck two minutes from the end but Muhammad Safwan Safri sent his shot to the right of the post.
In the other game tonight, Laos shot ahead through Saysana Inthavong but Timor Leste soon levelled the score through Manuel Varela Pereira. Moments later, Jose Vong intercepted a pass and coolly ran in to fire his team ahead.
Timor added a third from Jose but Laos replied with two more strikes from Kita Souksabai and Alounpadeth Phouangphet to put the score at 3-3. Jose charged back with the winner just under five minutes from time.
