JAKARTA (11 Dec 2013) – Barring any teams not conforming to the required specifications from the FA of Indonesia (PSSI), the Indonesian Super League (ISL) 2014 will have 22 teams taking part.
Having 22 teams is part of the effort from PSSI to bring the two previously warring factions back into the fold by having teams from the ISL and the top four teams from the IPL (Indonesia Premier League) playing in one competition as well as adding those teams which had gained promotions.
Under the plan, the 22 teams will be divided into an eastern and western conferences although the exact mechanism has yet to be worked out.
“If we were to follow the five guidelines strictly, none of the teams would qualify to play. But the PSSI Exco felt that there should be some allowance, so we will focus mostly on infrastructure and financial,” said Joko Driyono, the general secretary of the PSSI.
PSSI have set a 17 December 2013 dateline to finalise the number of participants for the ISL 2014.
