JAKARTA (6 Nov 2011) – U Zaw Zaw, the president of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) is more than satisfied with the four points from two matches which the team has hauled up thus far in Group B of the men’s football event.
Myanmar opened their campaign with a 3-2 win over 2009 semi-finalists Laos before holding 2009 runners-up Vietnam to a scoreless draw last night.
“I’m happy with the four points from two matches. It has put our campaign on track and I really cannot ask for more than that from the boys,” said Zaw Zaw after the match at the Lebak Bulus Stadium last night.
“The game against Vietnam was really tough as they are technically very good, so we had to be more calculated in our game plan. Sure we did not play as well as we did in the first match (against Laos) but we were thinking of just the one point rather than losing all three.
“Perhaps also, the boys were a little tired on the night as afterall, in their first game, they were playing for much of the game with just ten men.”
For the second time in two matches, Myanmar have had to carry their challenge with a man short when defender Moe Win was red carded at the hour mark.
But while the team may be playing with just ten men for the last half hour, there was more than ample support from the stands with Zaw Zaw bringing in a delegation of close to 60 people that included officials from the MFF, several MNL club owners as well as some government personnel (pix).
That perhaps motivated the team to maintain their composure and showed a higher level of discipline when compared to their predecessor.
With such a showing, there is no saying how far this team will go where surely, they will be aiming for a place in the final as they had done previously at the SEA Games 2007 in Thailand.
Myanmar will have an off day tomorrow with officials already planning some time out for the players today.
“They certainly deserved it. They worked really hard and we have done really well in our first two games,” added U Tin Aung, the team manager of the Myanmar team.
